LED Drivers

LED lights operate on low voltages, an LED driver converts the incoming mains voltage (230V AC) into an outgoing low voltage (usually 12V or 24V DC). The size (or wattage rating) of the LED driver determines how much load it can carry. If you need an LED driver for powering LED strips you have to multiply the wattage per metre of the LED tape by the total length, then choose an LED driver that's big enough to carry the total load.

We have dimmable and non dimmable drivers available from stock from brands like Mean Well and PowerLED. Our dimmable LED drivers can be dimmed using an LED compatible dimmer switch to allow you to fine tune your brightness levels whenever you want to. Or set scenes using home automation or smart lighting systems such as Lightwave.

Specifications

Constant voltage LED drivers have a 12V or 24V DC output voltage. They are mainly used to power LED tape and smaller LED lights.

Constant current LED drivers have a 350mA or 700mA output. They are used to power more specialised LED fittings that require a precise current.

Many other output voltages and currents are avaialble but these are the most popular examples.

Mains voltage is 230V AC and has a tolerance of 10%, some products are 220V or 240V AC which means they can be classed as mains voltage.

DC voltages usually require an LED driver to convert the mains voltage AC into low voltage DC. Popular DC voltages are 12V or 24V DC.

Specifications

IP (International or Ingress Protection) defines a products level of resistance to dust and moisture. The first digit is for dust and the second digit is for moisture.

Anything higher than IP44 can be used in bathroom zones 1 and 2. IP44 is splash proof and resistance to particles larger than 1mm.

An IP65 rating offers a higher resistance to moisture and is generally used outdoors. IP65 is usually specified for bathroom downlights but according to the Building Regulations, IP44 provides adequate protection.

An IP68 rating is fully water resistant and can be submersed in water, up to 1M in depth.
