IP65 Downlights: The Water-Resistant Lighting Solution
IP65 downlights are a specialised type of lighting fixture designed to withstand moisture and dust, making them ideal for bathrooms. These robust lights are sealed, which provides protection from moisture.
The "IP65" rating indicates that these downlights are "Ingress Protection" rated, with the first digit (6) representing complete protection against dust, and the second digit (5) signifying protection against low-pressure water jets from any direction. This makes them perfect for areas where water splashes or high humidity are common.
Minimum IP Rating Requirements
Technically you can install downlights with an IP44 rating in bathrooms including inside shower cubicles but most bathroom downlights are IP65 rated. Kitchens don't require an IP rating, you can fit any you like, its usually very unlikely that you'll get water splashes on your kitchen ceiling.
Integrated vs GU10 Downlights
Many integrated LED downlights are IP65 rated as standard, these types of downlights have the LED bulb built in. Integrated downlights offer the benefits of long-lasting illumination and energy efficiency. While the LED chips aren't typically replaceable, the entire unit's lifespan often exceeds that of traditional bulbs, reducing the need for frequent replacements.
GU10 downlights allow you to replace the LED whenever you like. In the event of a failure or end of life, you can just replace the bulb. There are some hybrid style downlights that have integrated and retrofit advantages in 1.
GU10 downlights are available in fixed IP20 rated, which means its touch proof but has no resistance to water, bathroom IP65 rated and adjustable. The adjustable versions are usually IP20 rated. We also have a large selection of IP65 adjustable bathroom downlights to choose from with options for GU10 and integrated.
Features to Consider
Some IP65, integrated LED downlights feature adjustable color temperature (CCT) options, allowing users to switch between warm and cool light tones to suit different moods or times of day. This flexibility is particularly useful in multi-purpose spaces like bathrooms or home offices that may require bright, cool light for grooming tasks and warmer, more relaxing light for evening baths.
Installation Advice
When installing IP65 downlights in bathrooms you should also ensure that your circuit is RCD protected (Residual Circuit Protection). While this is a minimum requirement of the latest Wiring Regulations some older properties might not have this, so its worh double checking.
Bathroom Zones
Bathroom zones are safety designations that guide the installation of electrical fixtures and appliances in bathrooms. These zones are defined based on their proximity to water sources and the likelihood of water exposure. Typically, bathrooms are divided into three main zones:
Zone 0, which includes areas inside the bath where the light fixture will be submersed under water. This doesn't have any impact on recessed downlights as they will only be mounted in your ceiling. Lights in this zone need to be IP68 rated.
Zone 1, encompassing the area directly above the bath or shower up to a height of 2.25 meters.
Zone 2, which extends 0.6 meters beyond Zone 1 and to a height of 2.25 meters. An additional "outside zones" area covers the rest of the bathroom.
Each zone has specific requirements for the IP (Ingress Protection) rating of electrical equipment, with stricter waterproofing needed in zones closer to water sources. Understanding these zones is crucial for ensuring the safe installation of lighting, electrical outlets, and other devices in bathrooms, helping to prevent electrical hazards in wet environments.
General Q&A
Can IP65 downlights be used outdoors?
No, you need to use dedicated outdoor rated downlights otherwise the finish will deteriate in the harsh exterior conditions.
Can IP65 downlights be used in a shower area?
Yes, IP65 downlights can be used directly in a shower area. Even mains voltage GU10 downlights providing your circuit is RCD protected.
Are IP65 lights waterproof?
IP65 lights are water-resistant, but not fully waterproof. The IP65 rating means these lights are protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction, as well as dust-tight. They're not submersible as the IP rating would need to be IP68.
Does IP65 mean fire rated?
No, IP65 does not have anything to do with fire rated. For downlights to be fire rated they need to be able to block or close off the hole in the event of a fire. Fire rated downlights preven the spread of fire and restore the ceilings original ability to defend itself. The hole that you cut to install the downlights into weakens its natural defences.
