Ground Lights at Downlights.co.uk

LED ground lights offer a sleek and efficient way to illuminate outdoor spaces, blending seamlessly into landscaping while providing necessary lighting for safety and aesthetic enhancement. Key features of these lighting solutions include their IP ratings, material quality, brightness levels, and the options provided by top brands like Collingwood, Ansell Lighting, Integral LED, JCC, and Aurora Lighting.

IP Ratings for Durability and Safety

LED ground lights often come with IP65, IP67 and IP68 ratings, ensuring they are protected against dust and water. An IP65 rating signifies dust-tight protection and resistance against water jets, making them suitable for various outdoor conditions. An IP68 rating offers even greater protection, allowing the lights to be fully submerged underwater, ideal for use in areas prone to flooding or heavy rains or even in ponds.

Materials and Design

Stainless steel is a common material for LED ground lights, prized for its durability and resistance to corrosion and rust. This makes it an excellent choice for outdoor environments where the lights may be exposed to moisture and varying weather conditions.

Brightness and Energy Efficiency

LED ground lights are valued for their energy efficiency and varying brightness levels, measured in lumens. For instance, some models offer 100 lumens with just a 1-watt power draw, while others might produce over 300 lumens for enhanced illumination needs. The wattage and lumen output can vary significantly, allowing for customisation based on lighting requirements and energy consumption preferences.

Voltage and Installation Considerations

These lights typically operate on low voltage systems such as 350mA or 700mA, necessitating the use of a constant current LED driver. Some units may also support mains voltage (230V AC). The choice between these options often depends on the installation specifics and safety requirements, with lower voltages being preferred for outdoor settings to minimize risks.

Integrated LED vs Retrofit Lamp

The LED ground light industry is dominated with integrated LED designs. These units are more compact in design and usually have higher IP ratings such as IP68 which are submersible. Retrofit lamp versions such as GU10 are also available, while the main advantage of installing a GU10 ground light is that you can change the lamp in the event of an end of life failure, they're not as reliable as the integrated LED option.

How to Wire a Ground Light

Constant current ground lights are wired in series and constant voltage lights are wired in parrallel. Its generally easier to wire ground lights in parrallel as you can connect one light to another and continue in one row. We have more information about how to wire a ground light here. Wiring ground lights is more difficult than other lights as space is limited and your wiring needs to remain completley water tight.

You need to consider the size of your LED driver and whether any controllers are required. Controllers are essential for colour changing ground lights. If you're installing them into paving stones, you may require an additional installation tube.

Best Ground Light Brands and Product Options

Prominent brands like Collingwood offer a variety of ground lights, including those with low-glare options and different color temperatures, allowing for the creation of the desired ambiance, from warm to cool lighting. Ansell and Aurora also provide robust models suitable for different outdoor applications, ensuring a wide range of choices for consumers.

Color Temperatures for Mood Setting

LED ground lights are available in a spectrum of color temperatures. Lower temperatures (2700K-3000K) emit a warm light conducive to cozy, welcoming outdoor spaces, while higher temperatures (4000K and above) provide a brighter, more vigilant light that may enhance security features around the property. There are also colour changing known as RGB, or colour changing with warm or cool white known as RGBWW or RGBW.

Selection Process

Choosing the right LED ground lights involves considering the installation environment, desired brightness and energy efficiency, and the aesthetic appeal of the materials and finishes available. With offerings from trusted brands like Collingwood, Ansell Lighting, JCC, and Aurora Lighting, there are ample options to meet specific landscaping or architectural lighting needs.
